Something Happened: Earth, Farms and Lightening Up

“I had rather be on my farm than be emperor of the world.” – George Washington

Well didn’t see this coming, but I’ve experienced a total shift (hoo-rah) – like a blast of fresh air in a stuffy room – I’ve been signing every post and every petition at the heart of the “Food Democracy” movement with my name and my information attached – no “anonymous” no “sally jane” no “john doe”. Hey now, it’s time. A slight step away from materials and a full foot planted in the ground.

There’s A Memory Here: Games, Donuts, and Freezing Cold Surf

Picture this. A plate of yesterday’s donuts in the office bought yesterweek on sale. What do you do? Play donut Pac-Man of course. Yes that’s it. That’s what I wanted to write today. Ever since this photo was sent to me, all I’ve wanted to do is post it on tumblr and re-post it for the remainder of my days on terra firma.

This is the type of thing that doesn’t dawn on me to do with a stale donut and naturally delights me every time I look at it. Plus. Transport, szzzzzzchrup. 1980. Mini-me and mini-older-brothers downstairs with the newest, hottest toy: Atari…playing games right before my mom calls us up for dinner – steak & onions, mashed potatoes and corn – the aromas of which loft about while likeable ghosts zap me. Over and over. I was never very good at video games, still stink at them – what’s with that I wonder? I can sightread Beethoven…with my hands…but I cannot for the life of me get past the first screen of Little Big Planet without dying 23 times. Personal quagmire. I’d have better chance of building a DIY arcade and getting flash mobbed than seeing the final screen of any given game. Read the rest of this entry

What the Heck is this Blog About?

So much awesomeness everywhere – a yoga room in the San Francisco airport, hybrid ferries in Hong Kong, Flash Mob Meditations [love you positive news]. And my 3-month new daughter smiling and sleeping and being joyful and healthy and my husband giving her big kisses and hugs all the time. I don’t know what to do with myself but smile. And I don’t know entirely what to do with this blog. I thought I would know the purpose of this one easily after 6 months of toying around. But I don’t. I have new work opportunities, I’m committed to being a parent first, my family can sort of see what I’m up to around here…but Facebook covers that. So what’s the point of HeartYup. Am I that much of a late bloomer that even this, my 3rd or 4th blog site, will take twice as long to figure itself out than the rest of my writing peers? Say it ain’t so. Read the rest of this entry

Vote with Purchases: The Perfect Sandwich

20120227-120541.jpg

a pro-organic pro-local farmers sammy

More and more I vote with my purchases and the result is yummier and yummier. No Monsanto here. Meet the perfect sandwich. At least in my world, egg/avacado/tomato & mayo bought organic and local puts me under a rainbow every time. I grew up in an Upstate NY farming town and still give lots of cred to the – what I’ll call – art form. Real farms are now far and few between with the onslaught of Monsanto but still. The movement toward earth-friendly, organic, local farms, save-and-clean- your-heirloom-seeds grows stronger every day. Like me after a delicious sammy like this one. Cheers!

A First: Tiny Mom Blog

Haven’t done this before – writing a post with one hand on my iPhone. Didn’t think I’d post about family either, but the reality is that I get to lose myself in my daughter’s world every day lately. And for me this certainly means posting less, tweeting less, cooking less, calling less and what a trip! To be fulfilled by tiny smiles and the caring of a big, big soul. Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy as my mom is known to say. I am, I am, I am!

Netflix Streaming: How to Cook Your Life

I smell homemade bread! Edward Espe Brown prepares foods as a meditation and shares tid bits of his life as a Zen practitioner in How to Cook Your Life. This is an ease-filled documentary of his cooking classes and teachings in California and Austria – a sweet reminder of the kitchen as heart. If you’re in the mood for a nudge in the direction of slowing down and re-connecting with Read the rest of this entry

Music Training: Fountain of Youth

one of my first real music books: Mozart Sonatas

Youth is just a C scale away. Everyone knows art and music do something to us that expands health, balance, communication, comprehension, but wouldn’t it be amazing if there was a cultural shift that reflected this altogether: respect for music education and musicians of all kinds. Like: it’s necessary for living a long and healthy life!

Step by step maybe. Researchers at Northwestern University (thank you!) have produced the first study showing biological evidence that lifelong musical experience has an impact on the aging process. No injections or surgery required, YES!

Read about their findings at Science Daily.

Healthy US: Nourishment Connection

I sure do like my steak and potatoes, spaghetti and meatballs, clam chowder, meat chilli, extra butter, cheese, sour cream, hollandaise and all, ya’ll. But I sure do like balance too, so when filling my plate for the day Read the rest of this entry
